1925 Santa Barbara Earthquake
The 1925 earthquake and its aftermath truly transformed Santa Barbara. The centennial of this devastating event comes at a particularly critical time for Santa Barbara; a time that invites reflection on the theme of then and now and what we can learn from the past. After the 1925 earthquake, Santa Barbarans rolled up their sleeves and rebuilt this City in ways that still endow it with a unique urban and architectural character. The civic effort involved in rebuilding/revitalizing the City merits acknowledgment and celebration.
Mission Statement
Mission Statement: The EQ25 Alliance was established to promote a commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the 1925 Santa Barbara Earthquake.
Who we are: Drawing from the greater Santa Barbara community, the EQ25 Alliance comprises local nonprofits, businesses, government agencies, and residents of Santa Barbara and encourages anyone interested to participate.
Why: The 100th anniversary of the June 29, 1925, Santa Barbara earthquake offers a unique opportunity for Santa Barbara to learn from our past, reflect on our present, and plan for our future. It is a recognition of our community and our resilience.
Goals: The EQ25 Alliance will promote informative and entertaining programs, events, exhibitions, and community gatherings. The goals of this effort include:
• To promote learning about the 1925 earthquake and its aftermath;
• To examine multiple perspectives on Santa Barbara’s history since the earthquake;
• To consider the relationship between environmental and social conditions and the past, present, and future of Santa Barbara.
The EQ25 Alliance believes that a greater understanding of the history of Santa Barbara is an effective way to increase awareness of present conditions and opportunities and to prepare for future challenges.
